José Ramón Hernández.
Indisciplinary Afro-Cuban artist, curator, teacher and cultural manager. Graduated from the Higher Institute of Art of Cuba and the School of Theater and Dance Instructors. Founder, artistic director and general of Osikán - creation nursery. Manager and curator of Zona Cero - creative experimentation workshop since 2010 and Habana Off - scale 1 since 2017.
His creative research explores Afro-descendant rituality, personal and collective memory, peripheral bodies and the construction of affective cartographies, work with non-fictional documents, and strategies of the sensitive to affect and intervene in social processes and in peripheral communities.
He has obtained important prizes among them: the First Prize at La Fiesta de laslaciones 2006, the Villanueva Prize (National Union of Cuban Artists UNEAC and International Critics Association) for Aleja a tus niños del alcohol 2014 and BaqueStriBois 2016, the Aire Prize Frío (Association of young writers and artists of Cuba) for Aleja a tus niños del alcohol 2014 and BaqueStriBois 2016. Caricato Award (UNEAC) 2015 for Family Trash - choreography of the absence.
Resident of the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Condeduque de Madrid and the Asociación Hablar en Arte in 2021. Winner of the Ibsen Zone Creation Residence 2016 with the Renting the city project or the seventh wonder (a study of the rents in the city or the city for rent) and the Documenta Sur Residence to accompany the research and creation process of the German director Stefan Kaegi with the Rimini Protokoll in Havana.
His work has been shown at the Havana Art Biennial, the International Festival of Havana, at the Fire Festival in Santiago de Cuba, in deSingel, Antwerp, Belgium (2020); Pumpenhaus, Münster, Germany (2020), Naves Matadero International Center for Living Arts, Madrid, Spain (2019); at the Museo del Chopo at UNAM, Mexico (2018); at the Santiago a Mil Festival, Santiago de Chile, Chile (2018); Ibero-American Theater Festival Adelante, in Heidelberg, Germany (2017); at the Maxim Gorki theater in Berlin (2019); at the Montreal National Monument, Quebec (2018); in New York (2014 - 2016) and the Dominican Republic (2012).
He teaches workshops, courses and annual laboratories of contemporary creation in various Art Centers and Festivals. Is creator of the series I Love Cities (2016 - present) that proposes a sensitive reconstruction of cities, communities or spaces based on the biography of their emigrants (I Love .... New York; Australia (Cuba); Berlin; Montreal; Habana; Madrid) and the Opira series, which explores the performativity of Afro-Cuban rituals and the philosophical body of the Yoruba religion or Cuban Santeria.
